Is your Whirlpool washing machine not draining?

Here’s how to fix it.

Have you ever entered the laundry room and found your washer full of water and wet clothes even though the drain cycle has finished? It can be very frustrating but do not get upset! Before calling a professional, here are some simple ideas on how to fix the washer which won’t drain.

Follow these simple tips to get your washing machine draining properly:

Consult the user manual

Refer to the troubleshooting guide in the user manual. If the machine is showing an error code, check what the manual says about it. For example, F21 error code means that the drain filter on the drain pump or the drain hose is clogged. To download the copy of the user manual, you will need the model number, which you can find beneath the washer lid, on the tub rim.

Check the drain hose

The drain hose is used to remove the water from the tub. It is located on the back of the machine. When the drain hose is kinked, bent, blocked or clogged, the washer won’t drain. To handle the blockage problem, disconnect the drain hose and give it a good cleaning. Then, reconnect the drain hose to the machine, turn the electricity back on and run the rinse/spin cycle to see if the washer is draining properly.

Check the drain pump filter

The drain pump filter traps the small items that fall down the drain. It is usually located on the front of the machine on the bottom. If your washing machine won’t drain, the drain pump filter may be clogged and needs to be cleaned.

To clean the drain pump filter, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the small access door using a flat screwdriver
  2. Put the towel under the access door to catch any water that does come out
  3. Turn the filter counter-clockwise to remove it
  4. Clean the filter in and around from any debris
  5. Reinstall the filter, turn it clockwise and close the access door.

Here are things that might be causing your Whirlpool washing machine not to drain:

Defective drain pump

The drain pump pumps the water out the drain hose to a washtub or drainpipe. A small object or article of clothing can sometimes create an obstruction in the pump, or a damaged impeller could cause the pump to fail mechanically. If the pump does not appear to have any damaged components and is free of obstructions, it is possible that the pump has failed electrically and needs to be replaced.

Broken lid switch

The lid switch is a small, plastic switch located under the lid or door of the washer. If this part is broken, it will cause the washer not to drain leaving water in the tub. To check if the lid switch is functioning properly, depress it by hand. If you don’t hear a clicking sound, the lid switch needs to be replaced.

Obstructed drain hose

The drain hose may be twisted, pinched or obstructed by a small object. If it cannot be straightened or cleaned from an obstruction, it should be replaced.

Defective motor

If the motor is defective, the drain pump will not work. Most washing machines use a reversible motor and it is broken, it is not possible for the machine to drain.
