Is your Maytag dryer not heating? Here is how to fix it.

When your Maytag dryer is not producing the heat, it can be frustrating, especially if you need to get your clothes dry today. There are a lot of different parts, which can be broken or worn out, causing dryer not heating properly. The first thing you should do before attempting any kind of dryer repair, turn off electrical power or shut off the gas supply.

Follow these simple tips to get your Maytag dryer working properly:

power outlet

Check the incoming power

If your Maytag dryer is not heating, it is possible that it is not being supplied with the proper voltage. Most electric dryers require two legs of 120 volts AC that is equal 240 volts. If one leg of voltage is shut off by a tripped breaker or blown fuse, the dryer may be able to run but it will not heat. Check the circuit breaker or measure the voltage at the outlet using a multi-meter. Pay attention that readings can vary between 210 and 240 volts.

Check your dryer settings

Make sure the controls are set properly. If you’d like your dryer to use a heat the “Fluff Air” or “Wrinkle Prevent” settings shouldn’t be selected. The “Fluff Air” cycle will spin the drum and blow room temperature air, with no heat. The “Wrinkle Prevent” setting can be used with any cycle and will spin the drum after the cycle finishes, without heat.

exhaust vent

Check the exhaust vent

When the exhaust vent becomes restricted, airflow will be reduced and the temperature inside can rise. It may result the high limit thermostat to trip. Therefore, the exhaust vent should be checked regularly and cleaned when required.

If these tips do not help to fix your Maytag dryer, Denver Appliance Repair Service can help you. Our professional technicians can diagnose your appliance and make your dryer working properly again. Call us to schedule an appointment!

Things that might be causing the issue:

thermal fuse

Faulty thermal fuse

The thermal fuse is temperature sensitive switch, which shuts off the dryer or its components in case the exhaust temperature is too high. This single use device is in place for safety. It is located on the blower housing or at the dryer’s heat source. Open your dryer's cabinet to locate the thermal fuse. Then, test it for continuity using a multi-meter. Once you found the thermal fuse has blown, it is no longer of use and should be replaced. It is better to call professional appliance repair technician to do this job for you.

heating element

Defective heating element

It is possible that your Maytag dryer is not heating because of defective heating element. To determine if the heating element has burned out, open the cabinet of your dryer and use a multi-meter to test the element for continuity. The heating element is an irrepairable part, so if it does not have a continuity, it should be replaced.

high limit thermostat

Faulty high limit thermostat

If the high limit thermostat has become defective, it could be a reason why your Maytag dryer is not heating. This safety device monitors the dryer temperature and shuts off the burner if the exhaust vent is restricted and dryer overheats. It is installed on the heating chamber. Open the dryer's cabinet and use multi-meter to test the thermostat for continuity. If there is no continuity, it should be replaced and the restricted vent system cleaned as well.

cycling thermostat

Faulty cycling thermostat

The cycling thermostat cycles the heat on and off to regulate the air temperature. It is normally located on the blower housing. When the cycling thermostat is defective, the dryer will not heat. Test the thermostat for continuity with a multi-meter. If the thermostat does not have continuity, it should be replaced.

igniter

Faulty igniter

Modern gas dryers have an igniter, which ignites the gas released by the gas valve. It is located inside the dryer next to the gas valve burner tube. If the igniter fails, the dryer will not heat. To check the igniter for continuity a multi-meter can be used. If the igniter has no continuity, it can be the source of the problem and should be replaced.

solenoid coils

Defective coils

The solenoid coils are used to open the gas valve and allow gas to flow into the burner assembly. If you see the igniter glowing and then shutting off without establishing a flame, then one or more of the gas valve coils have failed and should be replaced.

We have identified the most common parts, which prevent Maytag dryer from heating, but there are other parts that could be at fault as well. Do not hesitate to call us and schedule an appointment with one of our professional technicians!

You can follow some tips from the U.S. Department of Energy to keep your dryer working properly for a long time:

  • Dry towels and heavier cottons in a separate load from lighter-weight clothes.
  • Do not over-dry your clothes. If your machine has a moisture sensor, use it.
  • Clean the lint screen in the dryer after every load to improve air circulation and prevent fire hazards.
  • Periodically, use the long nozzle tip on your vacuum cleaner to remove the lint that collects below the lint screen in the lint screen slot of your clothes dryer.
  • Use the cool-down cycle to allow the clothes to finish drying with the heat remaining in the dryer.
  • Periodically inspect your dryer vent to ensure it is not blocked. This will save energy and may prevent a fire.
