Your LG dryer won’t start? Here’s how to fix it.

Oh, how we love the appliances that might save our time! The clothes dryer is one of them.  If you push the start button on your LG dryer and nothing happens, it can be frustrating. There are several possible reasons, from a door switch that is not recognizing that the door is closed to a failure in the main electronic control board.

Follow these simple tips to get your LG dryer working properly:

Check if the door is completely closed

If you have set the cycle and pushed the start button, but nothing happens, make sure the door is shut tight. Then check the door switch actuator lever. It is located in the upper right hand corner of the door opening. If it does not click, the door switch should be replaced.

Check if the outlet is working

A lack of power may be the issue why your dryer is not working. To solve this issue, open the dryer and check if the lights inside are turned on. If not, check the house circuit breaker. Reset the breaker to make sure it is not tripped.  Then, check the power cord and confirm the power socket works.

Common Faulty Parts

If you've followed the above steps and couldn't find the problem, you might have to replace a part. Opening your dryer and testing or replacing parts can be dangerous and should be done by a trained dryer repair technician. Blown thermal fuse

If your dryer won't start, a thermal fuse is the most common part to fail. This safety device protects your dryer from overheating. You can find it on either the blower housing or the dryer’s heat source. The thermal fuse shuts off power to the dryer when the machine gets too hot. It should show continuity or a closed circuit. The easiest way to test the fuse for continuity is with a multi-meter help. If there is no continuity, the thermal fuse should be replaced.

Failed start switch

When you push the start button on your LG dryer, the start switch completes an electrical circuit to start the drive motor and begin the drying cycle. If the electrical contacts in the start switch fail, the dryer won't start. In case the switch does not have continuity, the start switch should be replaced.

Defective door switch

The door switch is activated when the door is completely closed. It is located near the dryer door. When the door switch fails, the dryer won't start because the signal that the door is really closed isn’t being sent. If the door switch is clicking when you press it, then it is working properly. If there is no click, the door switch should be replaced.

Faulty drive motor

The drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel. If the motor is making a humming noise, remove the belt from it and check the blower wheel for obstructions. If there is no any obstructions, the dryer motor might be broken. Unfortunately, the motor cannot be tested easily as the live voltage should be sent to the motor terminals. It is recommended to leave this job for a dryer repair technician.

Broken belt switch

Some dryers have a belt switch which shuts off power to the dryer when the drive belt is broken. You can use a multi-meter to test the switch for continuity. If it does not have continuity, it should be replaced.

Broken drive belt

If the dryer motor turns on, but the drum is not turning, check the drive belt. It might be broken and need to be replaced.
